Relevance beats flattery
The best first lines connect a specific, verifiable detail about the prospect to the problem you solve. “Congrats on the Series B” is flattery; “Saw you’re hiring four SDRs in Denver — ramping new reps usually strains inbox placement” is relevance.
Lines to retire
“I hope this email finds you well.” “I’ll keep this brief.” “Just bumping this to the top of your inbox.” Each signals a template and adds nothing the reader needs.
Deliverability is a habit, not a setting. Automate the guardrails, watch the signals, and scale only as fast as your reputation allows.
